Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens was the January book club pick. Falling into the genres of Historical Fiction, Coming of Age, Murder Mystery, and Romance, this novel is the love letter to nature. Kya, abandoned by her family in the marsh at a very young age, found a way to survive in isolation and during that time Kya found three great loves. An already impossible situation took a turn for the worse when the town darling, Chase Andrews is found dead. The word murder along with Kya’s name spread through town like wildfire. Now Kya is on trial for murder, with the very people who ostracized her as the jury.
What I Liked:
Delia Owens was able to open my imagination to the world of the marsh and succeeded in making me fall in love with a place that I haven’t seen before. Where The Crawdads Sing also read like poetry, the words seem to flow right off the pages. The murder-mystery and romance storylines were intriguing. Even though I was bored to tears, I still wanted to know what happened to our characters, and who committed the crime.
What I Didn’t Like:
It took a bit too long (200 pages) to get to the meat of the story. Written from the third person, there were some missed opportunities to see the viewpoints of several characters that are important to Kya’s survival in the Marsh.
I am on the fence about this book. As you can tell from the very short review; I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t really like it either. While it is not badly written, I did not really enjoy reading this novel. In this case, the movie was better.
