Breaking A Reading Slump: 5 Tried and True Strategies

Have you ever read a book that was so incredible (or maybe so awful) that it completely derailed your reading groove? That’s exactly where I found myself recently - I devoured some amazing books last month, only to hit a wall this month. Now, I’m struggling to finish even one.

For an avid reader, a slump can feel frustrating, but it’s not forever. Here are five things that always help me get back into the rhythm of reading.

  1. Switch It Up 📚

Sometimes, the book you’re forcing yourself through just isn’t the right fit in that moment. If it’s feeling like a chore, swap genres, pick up a lighter read, or try something totally outside your preferred genre. There’s no shame in DNF-ing a current read. It’s ok to set it aside for later (or forever).

  2. Buddy Read🧑‍🤝‍🧑

Reading solo is great, but sometimes, sharing the experience makes all the difference. Discussing plot twists, characters, and theories turns reading into a social experience, which might be exactly what you need to shake off the slump.

A word of advice. Buddy read with someone that matches your reading speed.

  3. Take a Break (Yes, Really!) ⏲️

Hear me out - sometimes the best way to get back on track with your reading is to step away from it altogether. If books aren’t holding your interest right now, let them rest. Binge watch a season of Love Island, pick up that hobby that’s sitting there collecting dust, or even go outside. You will be back in your favorite reading spot before you know it.

  4. Try audiobook🎧

If trying to find the time to sit and read feels too overwhelming, let someone else do the reading for you. A good narrator can breathe life into a story and help break the slump.

  5. Revisit an Old Favorite🔙

Sometimes, the best cure for a reading slump is comfort reading. If you’re struggling to connect with new books, go back to one you already love. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve reread A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness or picked up a V.E. Schwab book. Nostalgia can reignite your passion and lead you back to fresh reads.

If you’re stuck in a slump, remember - It’s temporary. Reading should bring you joy, not pressure. Give yourself grace, experiment with new strategies, and trust that the right book will reignite your love for stories.

Slumps fade, but great books stay with you forever

Happy reading!
