Halloween

Day 5

Ch. 10: Halloween

Ch. 11: Quidditch

Welcome back to Day 5 of my Harry Potter Deep Dive. How are you enjoying the book so far? These chapters give us two of the most iconic early moments in the series: the troll in the dungeon and Harry’s very first Quidditch match. One moment cements a lifelong friendship; the other reveals a talent and a love for the game of Quidditch.

Chapter Ten: Halloween

What does Harry receive from Professor McGonagall? What are the rules of Quidditch, and what position will Harry play? Why do Harry and Ron go down to the dungeons, and what do they encounter there? What lie does Hermione tell?

Harry receives an incredible gift from Professor McGonagall: a Nimbus 2000 broomstick. Its sleek, fast, and the best broomstick on the market. As he learns the rules of Quidditch, Harry discovers that each team has seven players: three Chasers who score with the Quaffle, a Keeper who guards the hoops, two Beaters who protect their team from the Bludgers, and one Seeker whose job is to catch the Golden Snitch. Harry will be Gryffindor’s Seeker, the most high‑pressure and high‑reward position on the team. The game ends only when the Snitch is caught, making Harry’s role crucial.

During the Halloween feast, Professor Quirrell bursts into the Great Hall to announce that a troll is loose in the dungeons. As the students are escorted back to their common rooms, Harry suddenly remembers Hermione. She doesn’t know about the troll and is still in the bathroom. Harry and Ron rush to warn her, only to come face‑to‑face with the troll itself. After the chaotic fight that follows, Hermione lies to protect them, telling Professor McGonagall that she thought she could handle the troll on her own and that Harry and Ron came looking for her. It’s the moment one of the most famous friendships known in the reading community becomes the trio — messy, brave, and bound together by something magical.

Chapter Eleven: Quidditch

What does Harry overhear between Snape and Filch? What does Hermione do to Snape during the Quidditch match, and why? How does Harry catch the Snitch? Who is Fluffy?

Harry overhears a tense exchange between Snape and Filch. Snape’s leg is mangled and bloody, and Harry hears him asking how he’s supposed to keep his eyes on all three heads. A chilling hint that Snape has recently encountered the three‑headed dog. During the Quidditch game, Harry’s broom suddenly begins to buck and twist dangerously. Hermione notices Snape staring at Harry and muttering under his breath, convinced he’s jinxing the broom. To break his concentration, she sneaks over and sets the hem of his robes on fire.

Harry manages to regain control of his broom and ends the game in the only way a new player can: by nearly swallowing the Snitch. Afterward, while having tea and explaining the events to Hagrid, the trio learns that the three‑headed dog is named Fluffy and that he belongs to Hagrid.

Notes from the Castle Corridors

I love how Harry who never received a proper gift from the Dursleys in a decade, has received two of his favorite gifts in the world in the span of a few months. I made a comment about how Harry, Ron and Hermione have one of the most famous friendships in the reading community, and I hold tight to that statement. I love how this chapter shows that forming lifelong friendships are not always perfection.

🔮 Tarot Tie‑In: The Chariot

The tarot card that best fits these chapters is The Chariot. The card of willpower, momentum, and stepping into one’s purpose. Harry’s first Quidditch match is pure Chariot energy: speed, instinct, focus, and the discovery of a talent that feels like destiny. The Chariot is also about overcoming obstacles through determination, which mirrors the troll scene perfectly. Harry, Ron, and Hermione face something terrifying, act on instinct, and come out stronger — united, even. These chapters are all about forward motion, courage, and the beginning of Harry’s true path now that the three of them have bonded.

Final Thoughts from the Ravenclaw Tower

Halloween and Quidditch mark two turning points in Harry’s first year. One reveals the strength of his friendships; the other reveals the strength of his abilities. Together, they show us who Harry is becoming; brave, loyal, instinctive, and willing to act even when he’s afraid. They also deepen the mystery surrounding the third‑floor corridor and Snape’s involvement in whatever is being guarded there.

Before we move on, I’d love to hear your thoughts: Do you think the troll incident or Harry’s first Quidditch match does more to shape who he becomes later in the series — and why?

And when you’re ready, join me for Day 6, where the trio begins to uncover the truth behind what’s hidden beneath Hogwarts.
