Recap and Discussion

These next few chapters all our characters are all in a holding pattern. Elain is still… acting odd. Lucien is advising Rhysand on possible meeting places for the other High Lords. Amren, Nesta, Feyre, and Azriel continue their training. Feyre is trying to find a way to master the Ouroboros mirror. And of course, our crew is still searching for info on the wall and the cauldron. Everything seems nice and calm. Must be time for SJM to break my feelings.

Feyre had eventually agreed to have a healer come and check her out, which yielded no results. The healer Madja suggested that Lucien use the mating bond to sense what the cauldron did when it Made her.

At some point in chapter 29 Feyre makes a comment to herself; while Lucien and his brothers look alike, Lucien’s coloring is different that Eris. Hmmm. Is my favorite 7th son of the High Lord of Autumn Court a bastard son? Please SJM. Please tell me this is Lucien’s story! If I was recording my reading sessions for this part, you would have heard me squeal. Anyhoo. Back to the holding pattern.

Azriel and Feyre are having another day of flight training. And by training, I mean Feyre flying into trees and hitting the ground in true Wiley Coyote fashion. When she is ready to give up, Azriel tells her the story of The Nephelle Philosophy and more background on Miryam and Drakon. Nephelle was a cartographer (during the war that’s always referenced in the series) instead of a warrior, due to her small and malformed wings. Speaking of wings, all the people mentioned have wings, but instead of the bat-like wings of these gorgeous Illyrian warriors (swoon), Drakon and party have feathered wings. Nephelle was also a very good friend to Miryam. During a scene that resembled the parting of the red sea, Miryam was mortally wounded. Nephelle, refused to leave her friend behind, and against all odds, Nephelle picked up Miryam and flew. Her smaller wings became an advantage, and Miryam’s life was saved.

We - Rhys, Cass, and I - will occasionally remind each other that what we think to be our greatest weakness can sometimes be our biggest strength. And that the most unlikely person can alter the course of history.

The next day, everyone is getting ready to start their day. Another day of research on how to repair the wall, and dang it, now I want a blueberry-lemon muffin. Say what you want about Elain, but she has no chill. Cassian struts into the house, grabs a muffin, says good morning, and Elain looks up at him, blinks and says: “He snapped your wings, broke your bones.” To which Cassian replies: “It’ll take more than that to kill me.” Elain…LMAO! Elain. She said: “No, it will not.”

SJM. Here you go, playing with my damn emotions again. Because, let me tell you. I howled! I seriously thought that was funny. And then I remembered. My theory is not that Elain is not bat shit crazy. I think she can see events: Past, Present, and Future, and she’s having a difficult time managing it. And then I wanted to throw ACOWAR into a volcano. That sentiment was quickly and thoroughly diminished when Azriel offered to escort Elain to the garden. Have I mentioned how much I love these two as a couple? Lucien who?

I made a batch of these the other day. They were delicious! I went the lazy route and didn’t make the glaze. I’m a little sad that I didn’t. I also added a little bit of lemon juice to my batter.

Nesta and Feyre make their way to the library is search of, yep, you guessed it. Information on how to repair the wall. They find themselves trapped by two Fae who call themselves Hybern’s Ravens. Hybern used a one-time use spell to break the wards around the night court. His mission: grab Nesta and return her to the cauldron. Apparently, after the events at the conclusion of ACOMAF, the youngest queen was the first into the cauldron. “Practically trampled the others to get in after she it saw what it did to you and your sister.” It gave her immortality but took her youth. “I saw young hands wither with age… Twin ravens are coming.” And there you have it ladies and gentlemen, Elain’s words coming back full circle. But now’s not the time to think on it too hard. Feyre and Nesta have to figure out how to get around the Ravens, and down they go. Deep into the pit to seek out the creature that Cassian feared so much that he refuses to even speak of it.

Feyre called out into the darkness for the creature to help her rid Velaris of The Ravens. The thing that answered knew The Carver, and also knew that Feyre and Co. were looking for a way to entice the Carver to help them in the coming war. It will help her now… for a price. It seeks company to come to tell it of life. And once again, Feyre makes a bargain to save the lives of the people she loves, branding her forearm with a new tattoo in the process. Cassian and Rhysand arrive just as the screaming starts.

Everyone is gathered, and Rhysand tells everyone to keep their mouths shut about what just happened. He doesn’t want to appear weak and vulnerable in the eyes of the gathering Lords and potential allies. During the conversation, Elain said: “the queen might come.” Of course, no one knows what the hell she is talking about, and when Nesta pressed her for more info, Elaine says the queen who was cursed, The queen with the feathers of flame. I will be honest ya’ll. This is where I got irritated with Feyre. Azriel was the one who told everyone in the room that the cauldron made Elain a seer. Why didn’t Feyre bring that up?

My Answers

  1. I understand WHY she does it. And even though she was warned very early on in the series about making deals, she is constantly making them. That would put her square into the self-sacrificing column for me, and maybe even a little bit hypocritical. This particular time, she didn’t really have the time to think and weigh the potential consequences, but I am sure there will be some that will present themselves in short order. I say hypocritical because Rhysand is ready to sacrifice his life to ensure her and their family’s safety, and she will do just about anything to keep him from doing that. The only way to do that? Make a deal with the Bone Carver. Down in the pit, in an effort to protect everyone, she makes yet another deal with a creature she knows nothing about.

  2. I ‘m sure there’s a lot of back stories that I haven’t gotten to yet, but I think Rhysand is trying to hold on to an image that he has projected to the other courts. If he showed them that Velaris is vulnerable to attack, then maybe he will get more allies. It could show the might of Hybern, and convince the other Lords that they need to come together.
